It can be if you don't take the necessary precautions. It really depends on the person. There are guys who have been doing it for decades that haven't had any problems whatsovever, but there are also those who haven't done it long and have hurt themselves.
I've been trying on a regular basis for two and half years now, and I still have about an inch or so to go before I can really give it a good suck, but every now and then my back does hurt a little. On a couple of occasions, I have hurt it quite a bit, but fortunately nothing serious. Personally, I am more worried about my neck, as that has bothered me a bit more than my back.
