inconsistancy just goes along with things...even when i was at my best there would still be occasional days when i just couldn't reach at all (though they were a lot fewer then!)
i have found that not only the flexibility would vary, but some days different positions would work better than others. i would usually use the 'c' position (forearms locked together under my thighs), but some days i would do better in a sort of 'half-x' position that i have never heard anyone else describe in here.
i would sit with my feet together on the surface in front of me (like indian style, but without crossing your legs) and tuck my elbows behind my knees wrap my forearms around my shins and grab my feet.
the 'plow' never worked all that well for me, but i would still try it from time to time and it did work sometimes.
as far as consistancy goes...it's just like carnegie hall, "practice man, practice!" ;o)
