Hey guys,
I am not a frequent poster and I have not updated in a while be I have some news and an idea. I have broken that wall and swallowed three times now. I restrict it to days when i can get pretty deep for me.
Now the purpose of this thread is that I (hopefully) am going to get a deep tissue massage tomorrow. Has anyone had any experience with massage and flexibility? I am going to get the massage, do some serious stretching and then see what I can do. I'll keep you guys updated.

Massage is always a good thing, regardless of what you’ve been up to before hand. However, I would imagine, like with any sports activity, massage after af would be particularly beneficial. If you could fit in a bit of swimming and/ or a sauna or steam room before the massage, that would be even better.

I tried a deep tissue massage a few years ago with hopes of giving my better flexibility but I ended up really sore afterward. I don't know if that is typical after this type of massage.
I've had normal massages before too, and the ones that were really good left me so relaxed that I was too tired to try stretching exercises afterward.

I think it'll probably depend on the person doing the massage and what kind of work they're doing. Some very deep work (like Rolfing) is supposed to clear up old injuries and bad postural habits and I know people who swear by it, but I haven't heard anything about how it might effect solosucking.
Fascinated to hear how it goes - let us know!

I agree Al; it is largely down to the masseur how they perform. I studied Shiatsu (Oriental massage) for a couple of years some time back, where other students practised on each other. One of them, a girl who had lost both parents to cancer, had it in mind that nobody else she came into contact with would ever die from this disease. Consequently we would all hide from her when she was looking for someone to practice on because we knew we would be going home black and blue if she managed to get hold of you! I also know what blacksun means about becoming so relaxed after a massage that you just need to chill. I think what we, as AF practitioners should be looking for in terms of massage is the sports physio type.

Well the update is a bit of a let down.
I am back from my massage and feeling very relaxed. It was a deep tissue massage and really worked out some of the kinks I had. Great stuff. But I am a bit tight from everything. I can tell that it is the kind of tight that if I worked past it would eventually open up greatly and feel wonderful but I just don't have the time to get into a full stretch routine today. Usually with no stretching of any kind I can lick myself easily but right now that is a task.
I agree seahorses. I believe that a sports rehab/physio style massage would benefit a lot more as they are geared a lot toward stretching. I am going to let my body remain relaxed and rest for the day and see what I can do tomorrow. Hopefully this will act as ground work for some good stretching and limberness.

The first massage (the bad one) was at a yoga studio by a woman that was an older hippie-type and she used some really smelly massage oil that stunk up my clothes when I put them back on. (The smell didn't go away until I washed them a couple of times, but my car smelled or a while afterward too). They had a yoga studio where they practiced in hot room, and that piqued my interest, but the place was like 35-40 miles from my house and I only went there because she was recommended, but I wouldn't go back.
I actually found this massuese about six years ago (the good one) and she worked at a yoga studio not too far from my house. She was a slightly older woman, looked like a lesbian, rarely talked to you when she worked, and used unscented lotion for the massage. She was amazing. I actually enrolled in an introductory 4-week yoga class there after the first massage, but after the last class, I decided I just wasn't cut out for it and didn't go again. A while passed and I was still interested in getting a massage, but they moved the studio and no longer offered massages, to my dismay. So I have no idea how to track to down this massuese as I don't even remember what her name was.
I actually tried Massage Envy once, but it was a bad experience. I was massaged by a younger black girl that got frustrated because my muscles were tense. Well, that's why I was getting a massage. When it was done, I felt like I got no benefit and when I left they asked me if I wanted to tip the girl. I didn't think a tip was in order, on top of the fee that I already paid. I haven't been back since.

Well yesterday after a half shift at work, a hot shower and some good stretching I was able to get a bit deeper than I have before. I have no idea if the massage helped me loosen up kinks I had in my muscles or if it's just a matter of circumstance but I do know that this shows progress and that is encouraging.
